Mia is our youngest of three children. She was born profoundly deaf in both ears. Early on, we knew that we wanted her to communicate with us through speech and listening.


At the tender young age of 11 months old, Mia received a
cochlear implant at The Hospital For Sick Children in Toronto. You may have seen her on the tv show, "Life's Little Miracles", as they filmed her receiving her first cochlear implant.


A cochlear implant is a small electronic device used to treat severe to profound hearing loss. It is surgically implanted underneath the skin, behind the ear. There are electrodes that are surgically implanted in the cochlea or inner ear, that stimulate the hearing nerve allowing a deaf child to hear.


With intensive auditory verbal therapy at home, at school and at
the Learning To Listen Foundation, Mia has learned to listen and speak.


At four & a half years of age, Mia received her second cochlear implant, and now hears from both ears. We named her second cochlear implant, a Magic Fairy, to help her accept her new cochlear implant. Hence the name MY MAGIC FAIRY.


Almost one year after the second surgery, Mia is able to localize sound and hear in background noise, better than ever before. She is fully mainstreamed in senior kindergarten and has become a great spokesperson for her special "hearing fairies".


We will be eternally grateful to the AMAZING, Cochlear Implant Team at The Hospital For Sick Children, that gave Mia the miracle of hearing. As a small token of our appreciation, we donate a portion of the proceeds to The Hospital For Sick Children.
